Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young girl. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of that art can be an instrument for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and influenced her to say something through the arts. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma to later direct the documentary of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a young publicist for a studio. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, the agency has created lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
